Choosing bike storage
We sell bike storage and the gear that goes with it, so this is the short version of what we have learned: what each type is good at, where it is the wrong choice, and how to fit it so it is still solid in five years.
Wall or floor
A wall rack gives you the most floor back and is the right answer in a garage where several bikes live together. A floor stand puts nothing in the wall, which matters in a rented flat or on a block wall you would rather not drill, and it moves when you do. If you cannot drill, that decides it on its own.
How much space you actually save
A bike parked on the floor takes the space you walk through, not just the space it stands in. Lifting it onto a wall or standing it vertically gives that walkway back. A vertical rack uses roughly the footprint of the rear wheel, which is why it suits a narrow hallway where a horizontal rack would not fit.
Fixings are most of the job
Wall storage almost never fails at the rack. It fails at the wall. Solid masonry takes an ordinary plug and screw. Plasterboard needs the fixing to reach a stud or a proper hollow-wall anchor rated well above the bike weight. Fixings are chosen for your wall rather than supplied with every product, so find out what is behind the plasterboard before you drill.
Weight, and why e-bikes change the answer
A road or hybrid bike is usually 8 to 14 kg. An e-bike can be 22 to 30 kg. That difference decides the rack, the fixing and sometimes the wall. Check the stated limit against the heaviest bike that will ever hang there, not the one you are holding.
Tyres and brakes
Cradles are sized for a tyre width. A stand made for a road tyre will not take a fat-tyre e-bike or a wide gravel tyre, and forcing it is how cradles crack. Disc brakes are generally fine, but check clearance where a stand grips near the hub.
Working on the bike
A work stand lifts the bike to where your hands are and holds it still while you turn a pedal. Indexing gears and bleeding brakes both need that. Clamp the seatpost rather than the frame wherever you can, and never clamp a carbon or aero tube directly.
If you would rather have a fixed setup, a bench mount is more rigid than a freestanding stand, which is what you notice on a stubborn bottom bracket.
Bikes that live outdoors
Where there is no indoor space, a cover or a tent keeps rain and UV off. Both are about keeping water out of the drivetrain and off the saddle rather than security, so pair either with a decent lock.
